A light reddish brown dust rises slowly into the cool, crisp morning air and hovers above the shallow valley that had been home for a night to a thousand longhorn steers. There was no water at this night's stop and the cattle are up and milling, eager to get moving closer to the river, a full day's walk up the trail north, they are restless, but waiting.
The morning chow was at four o'clock, since then all of the cowboys have caught their morning mounts from the remuda all now at their positions. The horse wrangler has the remuda rounded up, ready, but waiting.
The trail cook has the chuckwagon loaded, the team hitched up, the hoodlum wagon, loaded with all the trail hands' bedrolls and other supplies, all pointed north, ready, but waiting.
The scene is set, all the actors in a state of suspended animation, a living western painting frozen momentarily in time, waiting on that important something to get the whole thing started.
A lone cowboy on a tall gray horse moves up on top of a nearby sage covered hill. Pulling up the reins of the gray, he takes off his old sweat-stained Stetson, holds it high above his head and with a slow wave, the Trailboss gives all the actors of this human drama what they have been waiting on to start another day on the Chisholm Trail...."THE SIGNAL".
